Welcome to Continental School District, home of the Continental Colts! We are a small school district located in Green Valley, Arizona, approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, and 40 miles north of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. There are many exciting and beautiful things to see here in our area of the desert southwest. Our school serves around 550 students in pre-school through 8th grade. We are very proud of our outstanding students and dedicated teachers. Because of their efforts, our school received the “Excelling School” title in 2007 from the Arizona Department of Education. We have high expectations for the students in our care and we are devoted to their success. ![]() Welcome to September! August was a long, hot month; however, September is promising to be a bit cooler for students and teachers. As a newcomer, I am surprised at how many snakes I have seen this week in the Green Valley area. Though I have not seen any at school, I hope you will caution your children to look out for snakes whenever they are outside. We are so lucky to have our own lunch program and excellent food. Coming from a big city with pre-packaged foods, I have to say that Continental food is a welcome change to my diet. I hope that parents will take advantage of both the breakfast and the lunch programs. Starting the day with a good breakfast makes learning enjoyable and productive. Safety – During August, the staff and students planned and practiced fire, lockdown, and bus evacuation procedures. We have updated, and will continue to work on safety throughout the year with monthly drills. The next drills will be unannounced. We hope that you will talk with your child about the importance of knowing what to do during an emergency and treating the drills as if a real emergency was occurring. Bond Planning – On September 8, we invite parents to talk with Kennedy Partners regarding your suggestions and recommendations for a new building or other needed improvements. Kennedy Partners will be in the teacher’s lounge on the upper campus (elementary buildings) all day to talk to parents and teachers. This is an information gathering session to help us prioritize needs as we continue to plan for school growth. Please stop by during school hours to offer your ideas. Parent Involvement Policy – The site council meeting on September 9 will include review and discussion of a proposed district parent involvement policy. The Governing Board will be considering this policy at their September 13 meeting. A parent involvement policy is a requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act. Free and Reduced Lunch Applications – Parents need to complete an application free and reduced lunches for your children. Please only complete one application per family. Even if your children do not eat school breakfast or lunch, these applications for qualifying families improve funding for our Title I program. The more qualifying applications we have, the more money we get from Title I for reading, writing, and math. These resources allow us to provide assistance for students who may be struggling in these subjects. Please help us by completing an application if you have not already done so. Technology – A goal for the year is to put more information on our website. I tend to add information as needed throughout the month, so check the website when you are online to see if there are school updates. The staff will be working on establishing websites for information purposes. This is a long-range goal for the year. If you have suggestions please email me. School Handbook – If you have not reviewed the school handbook with your child, September would be a good time to discuss our school rules. The new matrix in the back of the handbook explains consequences. All students receive due process, which includes a parent call if students are in the principal’s office. We hope that all students are aware of school expectations by this point. Please stop by if you have any suggestions, concerns, or just to talk.
